Serengeti Safari

The Serengeti National Park is Africa’s most renowned wildlife destination, famous for its abundant predators and the awe-inspiring Great Migration of two million grazers. Here, an exceptional safari experience is guaranteed. The endless grassy plains provide some of the richest grazing grounds in Africa, hosting the planet’s largest herds and highest concentrations of predators.

The Serengeti, a world heritage site, not only boasts remarkable wildlife but also offers cultural richness with tribes like the Maasai and Hadzabe in its vicinity. From the dramatic Kjopes in the north to the acacia-dotted endless plains in the south, the Serengeti’s diverse ecosystems ensure that every location is unique. In summary, it rightfully holds its place as the world’s most celebrated wildlife reserve – an outstanding and unmatched destination!

Serengeti Animals

The Serengeti boasts an incredible variety of wildlife species, too numerous to list comprehensively. This is why it’s an essential part of any Tanzania safari. The park’s primary attraction is the Great Migration, featuring up to 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 350,000 Thompson’s gazelles, impalas, and Grant’s gazelles. Many consider this migration to be the most spectacular remaining African wildlife spectacle.

The Serengeti also offers exceptional predator viewing, with approximately 3-4,000 lions and significant populations of cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Other commonly spotted animals include topi, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant, caracal, serval, bat-eared fox, hyrax, genet, hares, porcupine, aardvark, giraffe, jackal, mongoose, crocodile, monitor lizard, aardwolf, and various primate species, including baboons, vervets, and colobus monkeys. The park is also home to over 500 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Where is the Serengeti located?

The Serengeti serves as the centerpiece of a Northern Tanzania Safari Itinerary, offering a vast expanse of endless plains teeming with wildlife in the northeast of Tanzania. Its border merges with Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara. A short flight from Arusha, and from various other Northern airstrips, makes it a must-visit when exploring other Northern Tanzania parks.

Many travelers are drawn to Northern Tanzania not only to witness the abundant wildlife but also to immerse themselves in the vibrant Maasai culture in the Ngorongoro Highlands and to explore the Ngorongoro Crater. While there are smaller surrounding parks like Lake Manyara and Tarangire, these are often seen as additional destinations. In our perspective, the Serengeti truly shines as the star of the show.

When to go to the Serengeti National Park

To narrow our focus solely on the Great Migration would be an injustice to the Serengeti. Even without considering the migration, many argue that it stands as Africa’s premier park. The Serengeti offers vast herds of grazers, large prides of lions, uninterrupted panoramic vistas, thrilling wildebeest river crossings, remarkable leopard encounters, expansive cheetah-inhabited plains, and some of Africa’s finest safari camps. This makes it an extraordinary year-round safari destination.

Serengeti Migration | When is the Great Migration in the Serengeti?

While the Wildebeest Migration is often considered the highlight of a Tanzania holiday, it’s important to dispel the misconception that these herds are only visible during certain months. In reality, the herds can be observed in the Serengeti throughout the year. However, some months offer a more dramatic experience, allowing you to witness the sheer magnitude of the herds. For instance, from July to October, you can witness the awe-inspiring river crossings in the northern Serengeti, particularly the Mara River (see our videos of crossings here). Alternatively, in February, the herds gather for the calving season in the southern Ndutu plains, creating another remarkable spectacle.

Serengeti Migration Safaris exceeded our expectations! Every moment was filled with incredible wildlife sightings, expert guides, and unforgettable memories. We'll cherish this adventure forever.
